A Little Bit About Us
The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a non-profit tax-exempt arts organization, is one of the oldest musicians associations in the United States. Since its founding in Chicago, Illinois in 1965, the organization's members have developed a body of work that encompasses the spectrum of traditional and contemporary music.
The AACM New York City Chapter, Inc. a non-profit tax-exempt entity was established in 1983.
The AACM New York City Chapter, Inc. functions as an ensemble of composers and performers whose mission is to present concerts that feature world premieres, which are composed by AACM members.
AACM members who have been featured in our programs include: Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Henry Threadgill, Joseph Jarman, Thurman Barker, Frank Gordon, Adegoke Steve Colson, Iqua Colson, Chico Freeman, Amina Claudine Myers, George Lewis, Reggie Nicholson, Leonard Jones, Peggy Abrams, Richarda Abrams and posthumously Leroy Jenkins, Kalaparusha Ahra Difda, Lester Bowie, Steve McCall, Fred Anderson, John Stubblefield and Fred Hopkins.
The AACM is significantly unique in that it has nurtured and brought to fruition so many accomplished composers and performers. These artists have achieved influence across borders of musical genre and geography to play a critical role in the ever evolving process of contemporary music creation and its vital importance throughout the world.
The AACM was co-founded by Muhal Richard Abrams, Jodie Christian, Kelan Phil Cohran, and Steve McCall.

AACM Concert Series 2017 Performer's Bio's
CHICO FREEMAN heralded as one of the most important saxophonists of our time, musician, composer and producer Chico Freeman marked his return to the United States in May 2016, after more than a decade living and working in Europe. As part of the Freeman family legacy of Chicago; his father, legendary NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Von Freeman; his uncles, guitarist George Freeman; and drummer Bruz Freeman, Chico amassed a diverse résumé of performing R&B to blues, hard bop to avant-garde. His collegiate studies in Advanced Composition and Theory at Northwestern University led him to teach composition at the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) Music School, and while attaining his Masters in Composition and Theory at Governor State University, he studied composition with NEA Jazz Master Muhal Richard Abrams. In graduate school, a memorable performance at the Notre Dame Intercollegiate Jazz Festival won him multiple awards including a tour of Brazil, with a stopover in New York, where he discovered his reputation had preceded him. He was immediately embraced by a remarkable array of Jazz masters and began touring and recording with Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Palmieri and Jack DeJohnette to name a few. Concurrently, he started recording as a leader with albums that met with immediate commercial success and critical acclaim. Chico Freeman's career has enjoyed non-stop growth. He has more than 30 albums as a leader/composer and is a 2-time GRAMMY® nominee. His writing for film, television and theatre has won him awards in Austria, Germany, Canada and Italy. In 2013, he was presented with the Bicentennial Exhibition Award, History Of Black Music in Los Angeles. While he was dubbed a "young lion" three decades ago for his participation on the 1982 recording with other stars-to-be Wynton Marsalis, Kevin Eubanks, Paquito D'Rivera, Bobby McFerrin and Anthony Davis, Freeman now merits being called a "master on his instrument." Freeman has perfected an immediately recognizable approach to music and composition, blending what he has experienced from his past and providing fluidity into a future of infinite musical possibilities.

GEORGE LEWIS, Professor of American Music at Columbia University, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. His other honors include a MacArthur Fellowship (2002) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2015). A member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1971, Lewis is the author of A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music (University of Chicago Press, 2008), and he is the co-editor of the two-volume Oxford Handbook of Critical Improvisation Studies (2016). His creative work is documented on more than 150 recordings, as presented by the London Philharmonia Orchestra, Mivos Quartet, Ensemble Dal Niente, Spektral Quartet, Talea Ensemble, International Contemporary Ensemble, and others. His opera Afterword (2015) was most recently performed at the Ojai Festival, with additional performances in USA, Europe, and UK.

ADEGOKE STEVE COLSON & IQUA COLSON - THE CONTINUUM presents the Colsons music spanning the past 40+ years since meeting at Northwestern University School of Music in the 70s. They started performing together professionally in Chicago and became a members of The Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the early 70s. Their compositions with Iqua on vocals and Steve on piano and sax embrace a tradition of music with a modern touch and unique personal interpretation. Their work internationally and on the contemporary American scene has featured some of the great modern innovators in music as well as exceptional artists in other mediums. Their recordings together include a pair with their early band The Unity Troupe, and later releases Hope for Love, which was nominated for a Grammy, and The Untarnished Dream, which was voted into the top 10% of the Jazz Critics Poll. They both have received praise and awards for their work including Iqua's recognition by Billboard Magazine for distinguished achievement as a lyricist, and The Shirley Chisholm Award for distinguished work in The Arts and Arts Education from The New Jersey Speaker of the House. Steve's recent solo release, Tones For (Silver Sphinx), was selected as a Jazz Times Editors Pick. Their work has been discussed in countless blogs, newspapers, periodicals, and in several books. In November 2011 their early band The Unity Troupe was included in the prestigious Freedom, Rhythm and Sound Book / CD-LP compilation from Soul Jazz Records, London, UK with music icons such as Maurice White, John Coltrane, SunRa, and Mary Lou Williams. This collection/retrospective documented the influential and independent musicians who took control of their music in the late 60s and early 70s early roots of the indie movement. They plan to issue a second printing of this collectors item during 2018. Steve appeared as Sal Finestras piano player on the HBO series, Vinyl, produced by Mick Jagger and directed by Martin Scorsese. April 2017 he premiered his latest large composition, Here Is The Place, Our City, a 90 minute piece for 20 voice male chorus, oboe, harp and 2 pianos with Jazz quintet. The piece was commissioned by New Jersey Performing Arts Center in dedication to the 350th Anniversary of The City of Newark.

REGGIE NICHOLSON (Drums, Percussion, Composer) was born in Chicago. While performing with many musicians, Nicholson's reputation as an outstanding drummer was established. In 1979, Nicholson became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). During this time, Nicholson absorbed the musical influences of the AACM through the art of improvisation and the original music compositions of its members. In 1984, Nicholson performed for the first time his compositions for trio, which included AACM members, Light Henry Huff and Yosef Ben Israel. This was the first "Concept" that established Nicholson's own ideology and methodology in his works. In 1987, Nicholson moved to New York City. While in NYC, Nicholson has recorded with AACM members Henry Threadgill (You Know The Number, Easily Slipping Into Another World, Rag, Bush and All), Muhal Richard Abrams (Song For All, Think All Focus One, Family Talk, One Line, Two Views), Amina Claudine Myers (Jumping In The Sugar Bowl, Country Girl, Amina, Women E Motion), and Leroy Jenkins (Live!). In 1988, Nicholson premiered new works for his trio featuring Frank Lowe and Brian Smith at the NYC Knitting Factory. In 1997, Nicholson recorded his first CD of new compositions for his quintet, The Reggie Nicholson Concept, "Unnecessary Noise Allowed". Later, Nicholson experimented with electronics and percussion instruments, and recorded "Percussion Peace" for solo percussion. In 2007, Nicholson composed and performed live "Timbre Suite" (Tone Colors) for The Reggie Nicholson Percussion Concept. Nicholson's latest recording, "Surreal Feel" shows the maturity and growth of his compositional skills with The Reggie Nicholson Brass Concept. Currently, Nicholson is continuing to explore the aesthetics of his musical concept.

THURMAN BARKER, (Percussionist, Band Leader, Composer, Teacher)Growing up in Chicago in the 1950s, Thurman Barker was exposed to the citys rich musical heritage, regularly hearing R&B, doo-wop, soul, jazz and blues music. Accordingly, he began his professional career at age seventeen by anchoring the rhythm section for blues legend Mighty Joe Young. He then attended the American Conservatory of Music and later Roosevelt University where he received classical training. While serving as percussionist for the citys Shubert Theatre throughout much of the 1960s, Thurman played for numerous national touring productions, including Hair, The Wiz, Grease, One Mo Time and Aint Misbehavin. A versatile drummer and percussionist, Barker also performed with singers Billy Eckstine, Marvin Gaye, Bette Midler and Vicki Carr, and worked with classical groups like the Chicago Chamber Players and the New York City Opera. Perhaps Thurman Barkers most notable musical experience has been with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), an organization founded in the 1960s to promote innovative music and its players. A charter member of the group, Thurman first appeared in AACM productions with Joseph Jarmans pioneering ensemble. He then went on to play with many other members, including Muhal Richard Abrams, Amina Claudine Myers, Anthony Braxton, Leroy Jenkins, Roscoe Mitchell and Henry Threadgill. In the 1970's and 80's, after moving to New York, Barker worked with jazz giants Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers and Billy Bang, touring with their groups and recording numerous albums with them. Most recently, Thurman has performed with trombonist and composer George Lewis at the Festival International Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Quebec. Since creating Uptee Records in the late 1980s, Barker has released five recordings as a leader, including Voyage (1987), The Way I Hear It (1999), Time Factor(2001), Strike Force (2004) and Rediscovered (2008). In 1994, his work Dialogue, commissioned by Mutable Music, was premiered at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra premiered Thurmans chamber piece, Expansions, in May 1999, and that same year he became a lecturer at Smolny University in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since 1993, Barker has taught jazz history and performance at Bard College in Annan-dale-on-Hudson, NY. Through his efforts to develop the program, he was promoted to Full Professor of Jazz Studies in the June 2016.
